We built the first and largest online rental marketplace in the world, and I thought that was it—I thought we had made it. But my one big mistake was bringing on the wrong partner. It forced me to make a moral decision and ultimately leave the company. My partner ended up becoming the CEO. At that immediate moment, it felt like a huge setback, especially considering all the effort I had put into that business.
But here's where perspective shifted: the company was eventually rolled into a $43 million transaction, and while neither I nor the shareholders saw any of that money, I chose not to dwell on the loss. In that moment, I saw it as an opportunity to rebuild and come back stronger. I knew that I wanted to be better at building technology, and that led me to start Marketplace Studios, where we focus on building marketplaces for companies around the world.
Fast forward to today, and we own 100% of Rent Anything Store, which is currently in beta and gaining traction. We've learned a lot, and we're really excited about the future. If I had focused only on the setbacks and the things I lost, I might never have had the chance to start something new and build it better. That shift in perspective made all the difference.
