Understand what you are buying it for
Are you looking for freedom, a steady income, a hands-on role, or the opportunity to build something much bigger? We start with your motivations, strengths, financial comfort, and preferred lifestyle.
BUYING A BUSINESS / WITH STEVE CODY
A business can look attractive on paper and still be the wrong fit. I help you look at the opportunity, the day-to-day reality, and what ownership would mean for you.
Let’s start with a coffeeA PERSONAL APPROACH
Every entrepreneur is different. So is every situation. I don’t offer a cookie-cutter template or assume you need the same support as the next person.
We start by talking about where you are, what you want, and what’s on your mind. Before deciding to work together, we both need to feel comfortable with the relationship—and you need to feel confident that I can add value.
If it feels like a good fit, we agree on the support that makes sense for you, the priorities, and how we’ll work together.
WHAT WE COULD WORK ON
These are some of the areas we can explore. What we focus on depends on you, your business, and the decisions in front of you.
Are you looking for freedom, a steady income, a hands-on role, or the opportunity to build something much bigger? We start with your motivations, strengths, financial comfort, and preferred lifestyle.
We can work through the industries, business models, size, location, and owner responsibilities that suit you. That gives us a clearer way to assess opportunities and decide which deserve a closer look.
We can review the questions behind the numbers: cash flow, owner involvement, customer concentration, seasonality, equipment needs, and working capital. The aim is to understand the full commitment and prepare focused questions for your accountant and other advisers.
If you are considering a franchise, we can examine the system, training, support, fees, operating restrictions, and expectations. Conversations with current and former franchisees can help you understand whether the day-to-day experience fits your goals.
We can organise due diligence around the team, customer and supplier relationships, systems, inventory, leases, and the seller’s role. We also identify the questions your lawyer, accountant, and other specialists need to resolve before you commit.
We can discuss financing options, potential vendor financing, negotiation priorities, and the handover you would need. After the purchase, I can help you think through team communication, early priorities, and settling into ownership.
EXPERIENCE I BRING
I partnered in the purchase of the Ottawa Bobcat dealership after it had gone bankrupt and bought into Lou X Rentals, where the founder’s experience and our resources helped turn the business around. My experience with Cody Mobile, Perfect Party, and software for franchise operators also shapes the questions I ask about franchise systems, owner support, and fit.
